Downtown Sulphur was the place to be Saturday as car enthusiast from all over the state came to see and be seen at the Sulphur Rotary City of Springs Car Show.

The show, in its fourth year, gets bigger and better every year, said show organizers , with a total of 174 entries turning out for this year's show.

One of the show's organizers, Jack Beaty, said the quality and variety of cars at this year's show was excellent.

"We had everything from a 1939 Studebaker to a 2003 Corvette," he said.

"There was a good quality group of cars, most were in very good condition."

Entries ranged from cars, trucks, both classic and new, hot rods and motorcycles.

A rare 1969 "grabber" orange 350 Mustang Shelby GT proved to be the big winner at the show.

The vehicle won both Best of Show, first in its class, and the Police Chief's Choice award.

The Mustang was only one of three built in 1969 with a grabber orange paint scheme.

Owners Greg and Lisa Gisler, Oklahoma City, said they purchased the car, fully restored about a year and a half ago.

The car went through a total frame off restoration, meaning it was taken apart and restored from scratch, he said.

The car is valued at about $45,000- $50,000.

"This car has increased in value since we bought it, " he said. "It's a great investment."

The vehicle, with its 300 horse power engine, also boasts a signature Carrol Shelby visor.

The Gislers are members of an Oklahoma City Mustang club and attend many car shows, but said they prefer ones in small towns like Sulphur.

Several car clubs from Mead, Hugo, Norman, and Davis also turned out for the event, said Beaty.

The number of classes, 22, makes the show the largest between Oklahoma City and Dallas, he said.

After the awards presentation, a burn out competition was held on Woodruff Blvd.

Rick Armstrong, Lone Grove, and his 1966 Chevy Nova was named the winner of the burnout contest.

Other prize winners include: Mike Griffis, Sulphur, winner of a Barbecue grill, Tom Edmounds, Ardmore, winner of a trip to Las Vegas, and Keith Miller, Norman, winner of a custom car hauler.

Beaty said the show would have not been possible without the help of many people including Jack Rhodes, who emceed the event, and members of the Sulphur Rotary Club. The show concluded with Sulphur City Councilors serving barbecue to exhibitors at the American Legion.
