KALE AND EVELYN’S
2003 PONY PACKAGE
It all began on Saturday, August 30, 2003…Joe
Cooper Ford had invited the Oklahoma Mustang Club to do a Show & Shine at their
Yukon location. Kale had to work and I took our 1993 convertible to the Show &
Shine. After cleaning the car, visiting for a while and taking a break for
lunch, I began wandering around the used car lot looking at the Mustangs. Some
of the members had noticed I was out looking at the cars and told me I needed a
newer Mustang. Of course, I liked the idea of having a second Mustang but I
didn’t think we could afford two Mustangs. I figured the payment would be quiet
a bit higher than the one on our 1999 Taurus and the thought of insuring a newer
Mustang – there was no way! I went inside and talked to Barrett Determan just to
see what his thoughts were. He called to find out the payoff on our Taurus and
played with some numbers, then he looked over and said “What if I told you I
could probably get you into a new Mustang for about the same as what you are
paying now?” I told him I would have to think about it. After the Show & Shine I
went by Kale’s work to tell him what Barrett had said. His response was, “So how
soon can we pick it up?” Little did I realize that we were going to spend all
day Sunday driving to the different dealerships looking at new Mustangs trying
to decide on what colors we liked and what other options we wanted. We liked the
Sonic Blue and the Dark Shadow Gray. Kale’s requirements were that our new
Mustang must have a hood scoop and a rear spoiler. Monday was Labor Day and we
were both off work. We went to see Barrett to see what he could do for us. The
only car that was local that met what we were looking for was a Dark Shadow Gray
Pony Package. Barrett explained that the Pony Package consisted of polished
aluminum rims, a leather wrapped steering wheel and the running pony decals
along the doors. This was unique because 2003 was the only model year Ford was
using these decals. After several discussions with the finance department
Barrett had us approved for our first new car with the same payment we were
paying for the Taurus. We have both enjoyed this car for its appearance, comfort
and handling. Most of all, I have enjoyed having a Mustang that I can drive to a
show, park it next to Kale’s Mustang and we both get to participate with a
Mustang. This Mustang will probably stay pretty close to stock except for
changing to dual exhaust.
