Rob Hill's 2004 Mustang Mach I
My
love for Mustangs began around 1972. My stepmother brought a 1967 Mustang Coupe
into our family
that year. She had purchased it brand new while she was in college. It was a
green, automatic, 6 cylinder without
ac or any accessories, but to a boy of 8 it was the neatest car ever. It
provided our family many happy miles
until it
was demoted to the 2nd vehicle when we bought a new one. My dad sold it 1977 for
$200. My mom
cried when they drove it away. Unfortunately, I was only 13 and not old enough
for a car. However, that car
provided the spark.
My
first car was a 1967 Fastback (the same green color as my mothers coupe
ironically). It had a 289 4 barrel
with a 3 speed and smoked like a diesel. My dad and I rebuilt it and I drove it
through my second year of college.
I loved that car and would have liked to keep it, but needed more reliable
fuel-efficient transportation, so I
sold it. There hasnt been a day when I did not wish I still had that car.
During and after my college years I owned several Fords. None of these gave me
joy of my old Mustang. My
wife knew of my love of Mustangs from accompanying me to numerous car shows.
However, I dont believe she
realized the depth of it. I just happened upon the OMC website and subsequently
attended several meetings.
That was all that was needed to reignite the fever. I purchased a 1968 Fastback
from an individual north of Kansas
City in 2002. I actually picked it up on my birthday! It is a Gulfstream Aqua J
code with a 4 speed. It is currently
in my shop awaiting a front disc and t-5 tranny swap. It has a few rust issues
that I will be addressing in the future.
I never had any feelings for the current models of Mustangs. However, I fell in
love with the new Mach 1s
the moment I saw them. My wife and I drove several different colors at three
different dealerships. I really liked
the Screaming Yellow and Competition Orange colors because they reminded me of
the Grabber colors of the 69
& 70 Machs. I was strong and resisted the urge to buy it for about six months.
In January of this year, I purchased
a Competition Orange Mach 1. I had to have it dealer traded from Altus because
it was the only orange
one in the state at the time. While I love the look and style of my old
Fastback, the technology and performance of
my new Mach make it blast to drive. I have the best of both worlds! And to
think, it all started with a little plain-Jane 6
cylinder Coupe 30+ years before. Long live the Pony car!
